Our neighborhood experienced a significant loss of tree canopy from Tropical Storm Helene. Tree-lined streets throughout the community not only help to cool our environment, but contribute to the aesthetic and property values of our cherished neighborhood.

This Earth Day, April 22, 2025, the GPSMNA is rolling out a Tree Canopy Replenishment Program to offset member’s cost of planting up to two (2) trees on their properties.

Members can choose from a list of six (6) trees selected based on their potential sustainability and must be planted close to the street. GPSMNA will reimburse homeowners for one-half of the purchase price, up to $150 per tree.

This program is made possible by the proceeds from the Grove Park-Sunset Mountain 2024 Tour of Homes

We hope that this program can help our community restore our lost canopy. The Grove Park - Sunset Mountain Neighborhood Association appreciates your support. Together we will maintain and enhance the aesthetic that makes our community the most beautiful neighborhood in Asheville.

*The Tree Canopy Replenishment Program can be terminated at any time.

 How does it work?

  • Program participants must be GPSMNA members in good standing.

  • Trees must be purchased from Reems Creek Nursery (www.reemscreek.com), who is graciously supplying the trees at a 20% discount. However, it is important to note that this discount is being offered in lieu of their typical warranty.

  • As we are hoping to rebuild the tree canopy along our neighborhood streets, trees must be planted within 10 feet of the sidewalk from where the sidewalk meets the property. For homes that do not have a sidewalk in the front of their property, trees must be planted within 15 feet of the street. The city will not permit us to plant trees between the street and sidewalk right-of-way.

  • Trees will be ordered on a monthly basis, generally on the 15th day of each month. Participants should notify GPSMNA of their interest in buying a tree and Reems Creek Nursery will follow-up to determine availability and secure payment. Please contact Rachel Prioleau at rachel@prioleau.com with your tree request.

  • Participants will pick up the tree at Reems Creek Nursery and are responsible for planting and maintaining the tree. Do not forget to call 811 BEFORE digging to make sure that there are no underground utilities. Also, check that there are no overhead utility lines.

  • Once the tree is planted, participants should contact GPSMNA and we will send out a representative to verify tree plantings and issue a reimbursement.

How much will trees cost?

  • The price of trees will depend on the size and type of tree. For instance, a 25-gallon tree will cost more than a 7-gallon tree and a Tulip Poplar might cost more than a Sugar Maple. All available trees for purchase can be viewed at www.reemscreek.com. Inventory and availability will change daily.

  • The 20% discount from Reems Creek Nursery combined with the reimbursement from the GPSMNA work together to help make tree canopy replenishment more affordable for our members.

The chart below shows how the program offsets the price of trees that retail for various prices. Note the $150 maximum match for the $550 tree.
